This galaxy was discovered by E.E. Barnard in 1884 with a 5-inch refractor. E.P. Hubble (1925) proved its nature as nearby galaxy; this was the third object beyond the Magellanic Clouds in which Cepheid variables were found.

The distance adopted here is adopted from both Mateo (1999) and van den Bergh (2000), adjusted for the scale used here.
