Comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake
This comet was discovered on January 30, 1996 by Japanese amateur
astronomer Yuji Hyakutake (1951 - April 10-11, 2002),
using a powerful pair of giant binoculars (25x150), only 1 1/2 months
before it passed as close as 15 million km (9.3 million miles) from
Earth. The comet delivered a spectacular show with its greenish-blueish
colored gas tail of over 100 degrees apparent length in the sky!
This was the second comet discovered by Yuji Hyakutake within a few
weeks.
Comet discoverer Yuji Hyakutake has passed away on April 10-11, 2002 at age of
only 51.
