Discovered in 1977 by Cesarsky et.al..
The Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy, SagDIG was discovered by
Cesarsky et.al. (1977) on a photographic
plate obtained for the ESO (B) Atlas on June 13, 1977 with the ESO 1m Schmidt
telescope (a 60 minutes exposure on IIa-O emulsion with GG 385 filter).
Our distance estimate of 4.2 million light-years is based on a determination
by Lee and Kim (1999), and adjusted to our scale.
Our image was obtained by
Martin Germano.
