According to semi-recent work of the early 1990s, M33 is a bit farther away
from us than the Andromeda Galaxy M31. Using refined
Cepheid distances from Hipparcos results, a distance of 3.0 million lightyears
results (previous values have been given at about 2.5 million lightyears).
It is thus the most remote object visible to the average observer's naked eye
under good observing conditions.
