Discovered by Kowal et.al. (1978) in October 1978, this faint, fuzzy object was first suspected to be a candidate member galaxy of the Local Group and listed in their catalog of Local Group Suspected galaxies.

Van den Bergh and Racine (1981) eventually found that it was not resolvable with the Hale or CFHT telescopes. It is perhaps a remote background galaxy, or more probably, a galactic reflection nebula, a faint knot of gas, probably in the Milky Way, though possibly in the Andromeda galaxy.
