Discovered by James Dunlop on May 7, 1826.

James Dunlop discovered this globular and cataloged it as Dunlop 265.

This cluster was considered a former member of the Canis Major Dwarf galaxy thought to be discovered in 2003, but this structure turned out not to be a physical object. Instead, it probably came from the progenitor satellite galaxy now called "Gaia Sausage" or "Gaia Enceladus" (see M79).
