This star has been identified as variable by Sir William Herschel in 1785. It is an exclipsing variable of W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) type, i.e., a contact system. This binary star is the fainter component of a visual binary system, which is thus a triple star called i Bootis (according to Bayer) or 44 Bootis (according to Flamsteed).
