Discovered in 1958 by van den Bergh.
Confirmed as globular cluster by Arp.
In 1958 van den Bergh discovered this faint globular cluster on Palomar Sky
Survey plates. Exposures with the 200-inch Palomar telescope confirmed it as
a globular cluster (Arp and van den Bergh, 1960).
The designation "AvdB" stands for "Arp - van den Bergh."
