Discovered by John Herschel on July 15, 1827.

John Herschel discovered this globular cluster during his observations from Bath in Southern England in 1827, and cataloged it as h 2029.

NGC 6749 was also cataloged as Berkeley 42 or Be 42 (in an open cluster catalog).

The image in this page was taken by Martin Germano in June, 2003 with his 14.5-inch Newtonian telescope. It is an exposure on hypered Kodak TP 2415 film.
